Though the air was cooler and thicker than optimal, the sunshine and the light winds were conducive to some excellent performances in tonight's personal-handicap event. The first five in the handicapping ranking all set database bests. To see how deserving they were of coming at the top of this event, you may look at this graph of their performances for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. For after the fact measures of improvement, you may look at today's results sorted by the Performance (cube-speed) ratio of todays performances relative to each individual's previous best in the handicapping period (which goes back 1 full season to the beginning of 2004). Both methods place Doug Corner first, and rank the riders quite similarly (obviously we ignore rider Jamie Riggs from the handicapping since he had only ridden two OBC 15km time trials in 2005 and hence did not qualify for a handicap). Back to our performance-handicapped results, this year at least the handicapping method didn't err in terms of ranking some people who exceeded their best performance over the handicapping period behind some who had ridden more slowly than their best time over that period. We observed and reported this problem in both of the previous personal handicapping events on 2003-Sep-04 and 2004-Sep-02. Note that the qualification rules and the data set used to select the PBs from have changed for each of the three offerings of this event thus far. You can see the settings used in each year by looking at the options set in the form in the "Personal Handicap" section.

Also noteworthy tonight were Ellen Pazdzior's tying of Allison McKay's 2005 VBF standard of 22:51 and Patricia Konantz's 25:25, the fastest VCF time in the OTT series for 2005. Patricia's time tonight is currently the third fastest of the 2005 VCF times, behind two performances of Nancy Manning in the WTT series.
