Seven riders and an equal number of volunteers came out despite the rain. Richard Hinz justified his decision with "I'm going to do the Nationals again this year, and it might rain". "I forgot to turn off my computer when I got to work this morning, and I'm sure that I can bring up my average speed for the day if I do the Time Trial", said Celia. Volunteer Bram Moerman said "The sun is coming up... In Japan, or somewhere over there". Greg Brown, the only one of us out with good quality rain gear, had absolutely no qualms about riding. At this point, we were committed, and an exciting event it was! The young Brooke Boocock, a cadet, tied Richard Hinz for first place at 23:19. "You should have sprinted the finishing stretch, Richard. You've got underwear older than this kid!", said Jim in his usual colourful manner. An even younger Dale Beaton (Minime class, turns 13-14 this year) slid in at 28:59. Also, as Leona pointed out the next day, "This must be a first--all seven riders in Thursday's Open Time Trial came first. All of them deserved to, too, in that cold, wind, and rain.".
