Heavy fog on the course upon arrival lifted before the event began, and soon the coolish temperatures were remedied by the warmth of strong sunshine. Virtually no wind made this the 40km TT with the highest event factor yet in 2004, and Michael Nash took full advantage of the conditions to set a new record on the Calabogie course. At present, in the databased results, only Ray Duggan has ridden faster, and that was way back in 2001 on the old Almonte course. With the TT calculator you can see that Michael's 53:30 had him riding the whole 40km at the average speed of a 20:04   15km TT, while Ray's 53:03 would correspond to the average speed of a 19:54   15km TT! Another interesting statistic to look at is the performance ratio for each of these men of their best 40km ride to their best 15km ride. The interesting question is whether the lower ratio of Ray Duggan (0.8328) may be due to the greater difficulty of the older Almonte Course, the faster 15km course in the days when the Rockliffe Parkway had fewer bumps and cracks, or weather or personal differences. Overall, relative to their 2004 40km ATT bests, 14 improved (3 by more than 15%), 7 were within 5.3% of their best, and the other 14 were out for their first ABC 40km TT of 2004.
