Well that was a tough one! Some of us were reduced to distance running speeds at times on the way out. Others, however, seemed to take no notice whatsoever of the strongly gusting East winds. In fact Derrick St. John continued on with his upward trend of average speeds with another PB this week. His 19:43 time would be considered a great one on an easy night, let alone on this very tough one! Note that only 7 of the 41 male participants exceeded an average speed of 40km/h. To see a graph of Mike Nash's SRM output for the ride, click here. He averaged (only!) about 41km/hr on the way out and 49km/h on the return! Only 11 women braved the breezes tonight, and of the 5 who had already ridden an OTT event this season, only 14 year old Florence Laplante-Lamarche improved. Tricia Spooner and Susanne Russel were the only women to ride faster than 35km/h, but both had low performance ratios relative to their bests from last season and much the same was the case for many of the riders.

Note that the "Event Factor" (EvtFactor) listed on the title line above the weather information gives an idea of the relative "success" of tt performances on that night - relative to the other OTT 15km time trials in the same year. Early in the season, this number may be high merely because the other events thus far are not much easier and the riders haven't reached their best level of fitness. As the season proceeds these EvtFactors are recalculated each week. Riders tonight who have done at least three 2006 OTT 15km events (before or after tonight) contribute to this measure, currently these. With better weather conditions and better fitness levels developing in the riders, we will see tonight's EvtFactor become lower - OR AT LEAST WE HOPE SO!!!
